Wifi Body 4

It's Wifi Body season once again!

Wifi Body is an Independent Contemporary Dance Festival held annually.

This year's theme is "The Evolving Body" and it is being held, like before, at various venues at the CCP from June 25 to July 5. Wifi features the country's Contemporary Dance Companies with events such as dance concerts, new choreographers competition, dance workshops, dance film competition, photo exhibits, a showcase of emerging talents, among others.

Airdance is participating, and I'm watching them perform in "Unspoken" on June 28, 6pm, at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater) Stage. The show will feature new choreographies by Airdance teachers Ava Maureen Villannueva, Rhosam Prudenciado Jr. (woohoo!), and Avel Bautista.

The Workweek That Was

What a week! There was so much that needed to be accomplished, so many issues that had to be resolved, with so meager time and resources. I wouldn't have been able to make it without the invaluable help and support of my teammates, most especially the following:

1) The Project Team. Wilks, James, Sheryl, Daryl, Grace, Ron, MeAn, and Ramil really pulled through! I am indebted above all to Wilks, Daryl, and MeAn whose extra, extra labor of love (a.k.a work of art) allowed us to beat the tight deadline and impress the customer! And this was all on top of their business-as-usual load. Their willingness to help with this initiative is just amazing.

2) Rodel and Celine. What can I say - they hold the key. They listened to our pleas and accommodated our requests, and they'll make a world of difference! Hehe, cryptic but so true.

3) Tek and Ivy. The demands on these ladies have been especially tremendous of late, and always, they come through. Their sincere desire to better the org, to help employees, and just to do good work energizes and humbles me.

4) Vinchi. I know Vinch will move heaven and earth to help me, and I hope he knows how much I value that. Especially during these challenging times, I'm really grateful to have in him a friend, an expert, a sounding board, a trusted leader, a comedian (heehee), an opposite in temperament, a partner-in-crime, and a cheerleader (...OMG the image this conjures!).

These people rock!

The Fantasy Genre

I've read the Harry Potter series, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and The Chronicles of Narnia. Generally, though, I'm not into the fantasy genre, and I haven't been exposed much to it. That is, until I chanced upon a book left lying around by my sister in the house - The Amulet of Samarkand. One thing about me is that I really cannot resist an unread book. So, out of curiousity I started reading it, and I was hooked. My sister seems to have developed an inclination to collect bestselling fantasy series, so for the most part I just borrow her books. I realized that reading out-of-this-world tales can give one a totally different perspective of things. Here are some of what I've read and like so far:

The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini: Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr (Book 4 is not yet out)
Set in the fictional world of Alagaesia, the novels focus on a teenage boy named Eragon and his dragon Saphira as he becomes one of the last remaining Dragon Riders, a legendary group who governed the land in times past but were almost destroyed by Galbatorix when he claimed the throne of Alagaesia. The tyrant king's greatest fear is that a new Rider will rise up and usurp his position as king of the Empire. As Galbatorix attempts to capture Eragon and his dragon, Eragon begins a journey into the past and the future of Alagaesia.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud: The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye, Ptolemy's Gate
The three novels are set in an alternate history to our own, though many countries, cities, events, and people are from actual history. The books presume the idea that magic, magicians, and demons have been active throughout history, thus radically altering it. Set in a modern-day London, this extraordinary, funny, pitch-perfect thriller is told through the viewpoint of three characters, the magician Nathaniel (or John Mandrake), the 5,ooo-year old djinni Bartimaeus, and the commoner Kitty Jones.

The Mortal Instruments Trilogy by Cassandra Clare: City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass
The trilogy is an urban fantasy series centering on Clary Fray, an ordinary teenager whose entire life changes the night she witnesses a murder committed by a group of teens. The group are Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to driving demons out of this dimension and back into their own. Drawn inexorably into a terrifying world, Clary slowly begins to learn the truth about her family - and the battle for the fate of the world.

The Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn
The four vampire-based fantasy novels follow the life of Bella Swan, a teenager who moves to Forks, Washington, and finds her life radically changed when she falls in love with a vampire named Edward Cullen. The books are based on the vampire myth, but Twilight vampires differ in a number of particulars from vampire lore. For instance, Twilight vampires have strong piercing teeth rather than fangs; they glitter in sunlight rather than burn; and they may drink animal blood as well as human blood.
